Aromatherapeutic Pharmacology of Rhodinol Rich Essential Oils

Aromatherapeutic Pharmacology of Rhodinol Rich Essential Oils

Rhodinol (Citronellol + Geraniol) is a natural ingredient found in Oils of Rose, Geranium and Citronella. With its delicate floral fragrant notes reminiscent of petals it is widely used in fragrance and flavor applications. All Rhodinol Rich Oils have many uses in Alternative Systems of Healing and medicine

Essential Oil of Rose is extracted from Rosa Damascena. Likewise, Oil of Geranium is extracted from Pelargonium Graveolens and Oil of Citronella from Cymbopogon Winterianus. These Essential oils are said to be anti-viral anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-depressant due to the presence of RHODINOL (A term used to describe Citronellol + Geraniol).

Bulgaria, Turkey and Morocco are the main producers of Rose Oil.

Citronella comes from Java, China and India whereas Geranium from Re-Union Islands, Egypt and China

Chemical composition of rose essential oil from different part of the world.
Citronellol (23%), nonadecane (16%), geraniol (16%), heneicosane (5%) Iran-Kashan
Citronellol (14.5–47.5%), nonadecane (10.5–40.5%), geraniol (5.5–18%), henicosane (7–14%) Iran-Kashan [7]
Citrenellol (35.2%), geraniol (22.2%), nonadecane (13.8%), nerol (10.3%) Turkey [13]
Citronellol (15.9%–35.3%), geraniol (8.3–32.3%), nerol (4–9.6%), nanadecane (4.5–16%), heneicosane (2.6–7.9%) India [15]
Citronellol (38.7%), geraniol (17.2%), nerol (8.3%), nonadecane (7.2%) Turkey [24]

Rhodinol varies in composition depending upon its source and origin. Some data that I have collected from various sources (duly cited) is enumerated below along with the various isomers and an indicative price info.

Rose and Geraniums have about 45 to 50 percent Rhodinol. Citronella has about 30 to 40 percent.

However certain Cymbopogons are reported to be producing as high as 65 to 70 percent rhodinol in Bengal/Assam. The same genotypes, when cultivated elsewhere are not yielding the same result.

It has also come to light that micro-environment also plays an important role in the quality of essential oil that is harvested. Even things like Wind Direction or soil moisture changes the aromatic profile (and hence the GCMS) of the Oil.

Thus, it becomes paramount for a farmer to match the fragrant inputs from an aroma-therapist with the micro-conditions in the field to be able to produce therapeutic grade essential oils.

Our 25 year saga of experimentation and Research with Cymbopogons, spread over Bengal, U.P. Terai and Punjab has taught us a unique skill set. Thus, we produce some very unique essential Oils, tailored as per the aromatic inputs of aromatherapists from all over the world.
